Resident Electronic Monthly
Resident Electronic Monthly is a Bay Area open mic dedicated to live electronic music. Jeremy Black started it in October 2017 at The Laundry in San Francisco, typically on the second Tuesday of each month, with a format open to artists exploring synthesizers, samplers, laptops, hybrid setups, and visuals.
This page documents my involvement in the event and how it evolved from a local monthly gathering into a resilient community platform that survived venue changes and the pandemic.
Origins and context
Resident grew out of the Bay Area's long tradition of open, artist-led electronic music spaces. In the same spirit as other community-forward local events, it gave performers a consistent stage to test material, share process, and build audience across modular, ambient, experimental, dance, and audiovisual practices.
From the beginning, Resident emphasized participation and experimentation: first-time performers were welcome, and the audience was part of a learning-oriented scene rather than a gatekept circuit.
My involvement
I attended the first Resident event and, shortly after, I performed my first live electronic set in public there. Before that, I had only done a streamed event from the LinkedIn office with Danny Kim, R Beny, and other artists.
After about a year, Jeremy Black relocated to Berlin. A few of us decided to continue Resident because the community momentum was too important to lose. I supported promotion and mainly took responsibility for running the live streaming for the monthly events.
Pandemic years and rebuild
When the pandemic hit, I moved Resident to a fully online format and ran the event from home so artists could keep performing and audiences could stay connected. The continuity of monthly shows helped preserve the community through a difficult period.
As in-person events became possible again, I started preparing the post-pandemic transition with TanukiSpiderCat and Jah's Tin. Finding a stable physical space was challenging, and TanukiSpiderCat found our new home at Noisebridge, where we have been running Resident since.
Current roles and production
To support logistics at scale, I created Bookerpal.com to streamline artist sign-up and event management.
- TanukiSpiderCat looks for performers and manages sign-up.
- Jah's Tin runs visuals.
- I bring audio equipment, run the stream setup, and usually MC the night.
